Harry Blyde 2026 2.1

The winning Team SSA of Mark Weko, Vince Tamati and Colton Tamati is presented with the Harry Blyde Cup by Chris Blyde.

A record $10,000 raised at Port Taranaki’s Harry Blyde Cup golf tournament will help Hospice Taranaki provide the community with the best up-to-date and coordinated palliative support services possible.

The annual golf tournament, for those businesses and individuals with a connection to Port Taranaki, was held at Kaitake Golf Club earlier this month, with all funds raised going to Te Kahu Pairuri Hospice Taranaki.

“We are incredibly thankful for this fantastic donation and are truly grateful to be part of such a supportive and community-minded event,” says Hospice Taranaki chief executive Paul Lamb.

“This fundraising will support our PalCare system, which is the real-time patient care platform that underpins safe, coordinated hospice care. It ensures our doctors, nurses, social workers and pharmacist all have immediate access to up-to-date patient information, so every decision we make is informed, consistent and centred on what matters most to each patient.

“Given Port Taranaki’s strong focus on safety, it feels especially meaningful that this event is directly contributing to the safety of our patients – ensuring they receive the right care, at the right time, with the right information,” says Paul.

Harry Blyde Cup organiser Jeff Clement says he’s thrilled the event raised a record amount for long-time recipient Hospice Taranaki.

“I was fortunate to secure extra sponsorship this year, plus the hospice team sold quickfire raffles and the Kaitake club sold excess ham sandwiches to club members at the weekend, which enabled us to reach the record amount,” Jeff says.

“Reaching $10,000 is highly satisfying, particularly knowing the good it will do and the fantastic work Hospice Taranaki does for so many people and families in our community.

“Hopefully, it’s a benchmark that can be matched or bettered next year.”

Ninety players across 30 teams took part in the event, which is named after Sir Henry Blyde – the Port Taranaki chairman from 1953 to 1974. The tournament has been held in his honour since 1968.

There was some great golf played, with Team SSA of Mark Weko, Vince Tamati and Colton Tamati coming out victorious.

Lee Hughes won the eliminator draw, for those who landed their ball on the ‘Hospice Hole’ – the par-three 9th hole – and took home a $300 Rebel sport voucher.

“A huge thanks to our sponsors – Port Taranaki, New Plymouth Underwater, Whitaker Civil Engineering, Bark Products Taranaki, C3, Chemwash, Qube, Marsh, SLS, and Revital Group - who made the day possible and without whose help we wouldn’t be able to support Hospice Taranaki to this level,” Jeff says.
