As an integral part of the supply chain, Port Taranaki is a key gateway for exporters and importers – connecting the region and New Zealand with the world.

All cargo, or passengers, that come across our wharves must comply with the biosecurity requirements of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and the New Zealand Customs Service.

We are also committed to protecting New Zealand’s environmental biosecurity. Annually, we engage a contractor to remove undaria, an introduced kelp, from the waters of the port. The kelp easily gets established on port structures, and the removal helps the biosecurity efforts to stop it spreading, allowing our native species of kelp to grow and thrive.

Border control agencies MPI, the New Zealand Customs Service and Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) are located on-site, in the Port Taranaki Centre.

Te Whatu Ora National Public Health Service undertake biosecurity-related activities at Port Taranaki which includes:

  • Regular monitoring for exotic mosquitoes at the port to ensure any exotic mosquitoes are promptly identified and are prevented from establishing in Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Responding to notifications of exotic mosquito interceptions and incursions.
  • Responding to reports of ill passengers and crew on ships where the person has symptoms of an infectious disease.
  • Inspecting ships for sanitary conditions and disease-carrying animals and insects such as mosquitoes and rats.

Biosecurity is an integral part of the Port’s operations, and they work very closely with the Te Whatu Ora National Public Health Service and other agencies such as Ministry for Primary Industries to ensure effective management of biosecurity risks associated with port operations.
